Many web sites claim to offer free ringtones, and most of them are legitimate, but there are a couple of issues that seekers of free ringtones should keep in mind. First, some of these sites are either outright scams or at best disingenuous–They may have free ringtones, but they’re only available if you buy something else or pay for a membership first. The second potential problem with free ringtones is that the purveyor may be using private material such as movie themes and popular songs without paying royalties to the rights holder.
Many sites that offer free ringtones do so not because they love the public and want to make sure their ringtone needs are met, but rather as a lure to draw them in for nefarious purposes. This issue was highlighted most directly in 2005 when a judge ordered the shutdown of several web sites that were luring web surfers with promises of free ringtones, and then installing malicious software on their machines. Some sites that offer free ringtones may not go this far, but they may feature annoying pop up ads and other offensive content
Many sites may offer free ringtones without installing spyware or inundating visitors with ads, but they still may present a legal issue. Most popular music is protected by copyright law, and any use of the music, such as in free ringtones, requires that royalties be paid to the artist.
While there are many good sources of free ringtones, it is worthwhile to read independent reviews of the sites before visiting them. After searching the internet for months, trying out various movie and music download websites and being disappointed with the results I’ve come up with some advice. I don’t want to see anyone else get scammed by false advertising websites claiming to have millions of movies, music and video game downloads. When it comes down to it, you don’t really know what you are getting until you try. I have tried, made mistakes, but have also gained valuable knowledge about the valid websites out there. Below are some findings and tips to help guide you on your own search:
Stick to organic search results. When you type in a search phrase such as “download movies online” into Google you will notice dozens of paid links to your right. While some may be reputable companies, many are just landing pages referring media websites to make a big commission. These websites often offer very little new movie content, but make their money off the unknowing public.
Watch out for extremely low prices: Websites offing a $9. 99 one time fee for unlimited movie, music and video game downloads is clearly not giving you quality downloads. Sure it’s cheap, but you get what you pay for. Yes, they have thousands of movies, but who wants to watch no name movies from the 1980s?
Look for reputable websites. By that I mean media website that are not heavy on flash content, not just one large image and has a limited amount of banners. Be weary of pop ups from other websites that are trying to advertise cheap movie downloads. Often times it will lead you to an unrelated website or a cheap vendor.
View a sample selection before you buy. Many reputable movie download websites will offer a sample list of their media collection. Take advantage of this before you spend your hard earned cash. If they do not offer a sample listing I would research the company very carefully before buying.
Do a search for “reviewed movie download websites. ” Many authors and users, such as myself, have created websites to review the best companies to download media from. Like myself many people are tired of being scammed by all of the advertisements bombarding you each day. Read their reviews carefully and make and educated decision for yourself. People will go out of their way to spread the word about a good website, just like they will about a poor website.
Find a website specific to what you are looking for. Rather than look for a website that claims to have it all, look for a category specific company such as movies, music or video games. At least look for a website that specializes in one of those categories. Such as offering an assortment of movies, but also giving you access to music and video games. You will greatly increase your chances of finding quality movies or vise versa.
